Q&A with Garto
1. What first got you into DJing?
For the love of the music. I’d always come home from events thinking, “How cool would it be to be up there making people dance?” One day, bored at uni, I downloaded some DJ software and started mixing with my mouse. Not long after, I was saving up for proper equipment.
2. Who were your biggest musical influences growing up?
My family, without a doubt. They still put me onto their favourite records. I’m a sucker for a 90s piano riff - those tracks are timeless.
3. How did you get your first gig?
Through an open decks event. My biggest tip for any new DJ: network. Connecting with people already performing and running events not only helped me get gigs but also gave me the space to grow and practice.
4. What was your first ever DJ setup?
Aside from the good old mouse and keyboard? The DDJ FLX4s - perfect for beginners, and honestly, they’re still great for experienced DJs too.
5. What genres did you start out playing, and have they changed?
I started with tech house and techno. These days, I’ve gravitated towards old skool classics and more soulful beats. I think DJing becomes way more enjoyable when you play what you love rather than just what’s trending.
6. Is there a track you never get tired of playing?
K-Klass - “Let Me Show You.” That one always goes off
